Beyers Naudé was an Afrikaner cleric in the Dutch Reformed Church who was defrocked in 1963 for rejecting the theological basis for apartheid. He created the multi-racial Christian Institute and provided leadership to the South African Council of Churches in the mid-1980s. When this photograph was taken, he was under a banning order.
