Robben Island prisoners' holiday card order list


Twenty-nine prisoners in the isolation section of Robben Island prison signed this document to indicate how many holiday cards they wished to purchase. Correspondence with family and friends was highly valued by prisoners, and sometimes their cards and letters were withheld by prison authorities. Included among the signatures are Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, Andrew Mlangeni, Raymond Mhlaba, Wilton Mkwayi, Ahmed Kathrada, Laloo Chiba, and Billy Nair (all members of the African National Congress); John Nyathi Pokela (Pan Africanist Congress); Eddie Daniels (African Resistance Movement), Neville Alexander (National Liberation Front), and Louis Mtshizana (Unity Movement).
