"By 1969, as South African Coloured people, we were asked to leave that area, and we were moved into Wentworth ... which is placed adjacent to an oil refinery." [3:39]
Bobby Peek explains how Wentworth, south of Durban, was created for Coloured people from throughout KwaZulu-Natal and its placement, along with the Indian community of Merebank, amidst polluting oil refineries and many other chemical plants.
Sven (Bobby) Peek grew up in the Coloured township of Wentworth in South Durban, an area surrounded by oil refineries and other chemical industries. He became active in the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA), and he received the Goldman Environmental Prize in 1998. He now directs Groundwork, a national South African environmental justice organization affiliated with Friends of the Earth.
