Interview Segment

John Biyase interviewed by Jesse Harber
October 7, 2006 Johannesburg, South Africa.
"'If you give us trouble, we'll take you to the workshop' ... It was very scary. We knew what the workshop meant - death." [3:58]

Biyase describes how, in 1977, he and many other students were detained for 3-1/2 weeks when they marched to John Vorster Square prison in Johannesburg to protest the indefinite detention of many student leaders. The prison guards threatened that they would be taken to the tenth floor - "the workshop" - and were told stories of prisoners who had supposedly "slipped" on soap or "fallen" out the window to their death.
