Anthropologist David Webster analyzed how chronic poverty was created in African rural areas by colonial policies designed to acquire African labor for mines, farms and industry. Communities that add been economically successful were “under-developed” as the white-owned economy developed. (Magazine Article)
Webster was active in the anti-apartheid movement, especially the Detainees' Parents' Support Committee in the 1980s. He was assassinated by a government hit squad in 1989.
